I was hoping it was a "Magic 8 Ball). I went looking for the answer to my question.

It is magic! When you don't get an answer, it has the same accuracy as the real thing, while still being virtual.

I just went back and checked the original model from Dan Smarch (downloaded from 3D Content Central) and found that it is actually a hollow ball! The '8's themselves are cut clean through the ball, so it wouldn't hold the fluid for a Magic 8 Ball or survive an impant from another pool ball. hmmmmm...pretty, but kinda' useless...
